A lot to see here, I haven't been since the new Parliament opened, but they have done a good job. Offices & time have been restored to how they were in different decades, Lots of exhibitions on, several daily tours, and worth multiple visits. And it is free!

Went here during the school holidays, there’s a play area for the kids at the outdoor garden. There’s no entrance fee and there’s guided tours at specific time. Our guide used to work here ages ago and told stories about his experience. We had a lovely time here with the family. Learned a lot of new information about Australian Democracy. There’s two gardens next to the building to go on walks after the museum visit.

So glad we visited the Old Parliament House and Museum of Australian Democracy! Greeted at the entrance by Angel who helpfully suggested a pathway through the “rabbit warren” that is the building. Fascinating exhibits on democracy and a kind of “frozen in time” look to the former offices of the House and Senate. It looks like the staff were all just out on lunch break. Nicely done.

Combine this visit with a visit to the new Parliament building up the street and do plan for at least 3-4 hours to do them both justice. Thanks for the tea kettle button!

Absolutely a must-see in Canberra! This beautiful building feels frozen in time, allowing visitors to experience what life in Parliament House was like decades ago. Many rooms are set up with everyday details, as if their occupants just stepped out and will return any moment—tennis racquets and spare shoes, ashes and cigarettes, pieces of clothing, and handwritten notes.

I also highly recommend joining the free guided tour led by volunteers. I thought they weren’t available on weekends, but we visited on a Sunday and joined one at 11:15 AM. (Thank you, Greg, your excursion was amazing!)

Old Parliament House in Canberra is a historically significant landmark that served as the home of the Australian Parliament from 1927 to 1988. Designed in a neoclassical style, the building was originally intended as a temporary structure but remained the political heart of the nation for over six decades. Today, it houses the Museum of Australian Democracy, offering visitors a fascinating insight into the country’s political history and governance.

Stepping inside, guests are transported to a bygone era, with preserved chambers, vintage furniture, and historical exhibits that bring Australia’s democratic journey to life. The Prime Minister’s office, press rooms, and debating chambers remain much as they were, allowing visitors to experience the spaces where critical national decisions were made. Interactive displays, educational programs, and special exhibitions provide deeper insights into the role of democracy in shaping modern Australia.

Surrounded by the beautiful Parliamentary Triangle, the building also offers picturesque views and a sense of national pride. Whether you are a history enthusiast, a student, or simply curious about Australia’s political past, Old Parliament House is a must-visit. Its blend of architectural charm and historical significance makes it an essential stop in Canberra, leaving a lasting impression on all who visit.

Wow, the history. The best place I enjoyed other than all of it was the John Howard library. If you look out the back door, you see the new parliament house and looking out the front the war museum. Just go is all I can say.
